Greetings Patients and Friends ~

Wow, what a beautiful summer! I can’t remember one with such consistently fabulous weather. This summer has been amazing but it’s going by fast. I feel I am going to blink and we’ll be carving pumpkins. I recently had the privilege of spending time in Sunriver with family. Vacation days in Sunriver consisted of biking, hiking, swimming, rafting, cliff jumping, and so much more. Talk about an active vacation destination. In the middle of the first night I was woken by my 12 year old informing me he felt like he was going to be sick. As I followed him to the bathroom, I felt his head for a non-existent fever and we contemplated the source of his illness. I hoped it was not what we all ate for dinner. He did get sick and soon went peacefully back to sleep until morning. When he woke he felt much better but as we discussed the source of the bug, the most likely culprit seemed dehydration, which symptoms can often present, flu-like. After that came constant reminders to the kids to drink water to stay hydrated and repeatedly apply sunscreen. Other trips I will be taking this summer will be dental related venues: the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry conference in Colorado and the Annual Spear Summit - Leadership Symposium in Arizona. Certainly destinations where there will be equal if not greater a concern for safety in the sun.
I hope you have a wonderful and safe summer whether it is spent enjoying the endless days of sunshine here in the Northwest or elsewhere. ~ Dr. H

Summer Reminders:
Helmet up if you are biking or skateboarding.
SPF lip-balm will protect your lips from the sun during the hot summer. Don’t forget to sunscreen up those less obvious places like ears and back of neck.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. These hot days are a killer and zap your system of hydration while you are active. Remember sipping on acidic, sugary beverages during the day can increase risk of tooth decay.
Touch-Up your teeth with bleach-trays to keep your smile white for summer.
Schedule your child’s dental cleanings and treatment before the school year begins.

Case Article: Dark Lines at the Gumline

There is nothing
more unaesthetic than a dark line at the gumline of a front tooth, especially if you have a big smile. There are several reasons why a tooth may be dark near the gums but the most common is because it has been crowned and the materials used to restore the tooth has a thin gold or metal substructure. Did You know?

• Say Cheese! The calcium and phosphorous found in cheese is healthy for your teeth, it reduces the pH level in plaque and re-mineralizes the enamel.
• 73% of American would rather go grocery shopping than floss
• A tooth that has been knocked out starts to die within 15 minutes, but if you put it in milk or hold it in your mouth it will survive longer.
