This American Life - Host: Ira Glass
May 1, 2015
I fell in love with podcasts 7 years ago while training for a half Ironman. With extensive hours on my bike and running I quickly burnt through music playlists and was bored until a friend introduced me to podcasts. They were engaging, told a story… and taught me something, often on a subject that I knew little to nothing about.
This American Life (TAL) has remained one of my favorites. TAL is a free weekly hour-long radio program produced by WBEZ Chicago, hosted by Ira Glass. It is broadcasted to numerous public radio stations in the United States and internationally. TAL is primarily a non-fiction journalistic program and often features memoirs, essays, short fiction, field recordings and is often told in first person narratives. Each week’s show has a theme, usually explored in several “acts”. The show ranges from gloomy to ironic, from thought provoking to humorous… often-addressing current events and aspects of human nature.
I find it very difficult to recommend one. Some of the older TAL podcasts are my favorites including: The Giant Money Pool, Switched at Birth, Superheros… Americans in Paris just to name a few.
With summer on quickly closing in … I found this one particularly appropriate and speaks to something many of us experienced as children… CAMP!
